The Salcantay Mountain (6,271 meters / 20,471 feet above sea level), part of the Vilcanota mountain range, was called "Apu" by the Incas and was worshipped as a deity of guidance and protection. Salcantay dominates a great part of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the spectacular Vilcanota Mountains are the principal starting point for trekking programs. The whole area is filled with majestic natural landscapes and attractive Inca archaeological sites.
Day 1 | Cusco - Sayllapata - Soyrococha
Early in the morning we will pick you up from your selected hotel. We will leave in private transport to Mollepata (2,800 m.a.s.l.), beautiful scenic journey through Limatambo and stops for panoramic views of the Apurimac Valley, where you can have a breakfast in a typical restaurant. After that we will drive for 1hr until our trailhead called Sayllapata (3,200 m.a.s.l.), there we will meet our “Arrieros” (horsemen) and trek staff, 2 1/2 hrs hiking through traditional Andean communities like Cruzpata, Challacancha, unspoiled Andean villages to Soraypampa (3,750 m.a.s.l.), where we will have lunch. Then after 4 hours will arrive to our first campsite, Soyrococha (4,200 m.a.s.l.).
Day 2 | Soyrococha - Huayraqmachay - Colpapampa
The second day we will ascent to the highest point of our trek, Salcantay Pass 4,600 mts above sea level, from this point we can appreciate the spectacular views of the Salcantay Mountain, a stunning snow capped mountain (6271 mts), 3 hours walking with spectacular views of the mountains Humantay and Huayanay, small lakes and moraines to arrive to our lunch site, Huayraqmachay (3700 mts), then we will go down for 3 1/2 hours until our second campsite, Colpabamba (2600 mts).
Day 3 | Colpapampa - Playa
The third day, the group will walk for 4 hours, downhill easy hike, we will be introduced to a high jungle niche called “Ceja de Selva” where coffee, coca and fruits plantations can be observed, time to shower in a waterfall, take amazing pictures, with luck we can observe the famous Peruvian National Bird "Gallito de las Rocas" (Andean Cock of the Rocks), stop in Playa (2250 mts) for lunch and free afternoon.
Day 4 | Playa - Hidroelectrica - Aguas calientes
After a short journey by bus (1hour) we will arrive to Santa Teresa Bridge, from there we will walk to Hidroelectrica (Km 116) for 2 hours, have a lunch and then continue walking for two more hours to Aguas Calientes (2 000 meters). Accommodation in Aguas Calientes.
Day 5 | Machu Picchu - Cusco
Early walk or bus to the Machu Picchu Citadel, guided tour and plenty of free time to explore the complex on your own. Optional: Climb to the Huayna Picchu Mountain, Temple of the Moon or the Sun Gate; after that we will have to take the bus to go down to Aguas Calientes town to take our return train to Cusco, arriving at night to Cusco City.
